One Door closes. Other Doors Open.

Life’s weird,  it puts you in odd, uncomfortable situations and occasionally out of the chaos potentially wonderful opportunities materialize when you least expect them.  For example:
This week I am winding down a consulting gig that got cut short by the client’s management who decided 2 weeks ago to cut the budget on the project I [...]

GUI as Interpretive Dance: Oblong/g-speak

Maybe one day I’ll be cool enough to get a TED invite and i can see stuff like Oblong’s demo of their g-speak interface.
As eye candy this is wickedly cool, and, naturally since its developed by the guy who did the design of the imagined interface for Speilberg’s Minority Report, everyone thinks it’s [...]

Time for an IP/Trademark Penalty Box?

Iiiinteresting. Twitter seems to, despite previous assurances from co-founder Biz Stone that it wouldn’t, be going after app developers using “Tweet” as part of their app names.
Now, if Twitter actually had a trademark on the term “tweet” it would be one thing, but to be sending takedown notices for something you don’t own [...]

First, Do No Harm….

I’ve been thinking more over night about the whole Google Buzz fiasco, and the more I think about it, the more horrified I am.
What Google’s done in not thinking through the implications of the auto-follow defaults for Buzz will not be known for some time – but exposing everyone’s social network in this [...]

Just in from the Future: Delicious Library 2.0!!!

Published byDavid HM Spector under OS X, Software

[update! Figures Apple would make me eat my words -- they just released MacOS X 10.5.3 at about 1:30PM ET. Did they do it just so Delicious Library users would get the full benefit of the graphics speedups? I hope so ]
Yay! My favorite [...]

So, my 7 yr old daughter surfed on over to Disney this evening after finsihing her homework to play a few games.    No matter what game she tried to play she got a “redirect” message (see below – talk about your poor site design), and then a notice that the game she selected (and it [...]

Subversion Hell

About 2 years ago I decided that CVS was old and decrepit enough to be just too hard to use, too brittle and I decided to get with the times and migrate all my various source archives to what all the cool kids were using, Subversion, or “svn.” And for about 2 years it’s [...]

Porting over old posts to the new blog

Published byDavid HM Spector under Software

Oh, joy! Isn’t this fun! (hint: “no,” is the correct answer.)
Please pardon the detritus as I move old posts into the new word-press universe….

“I have a list of 235 patents…”

How McCarthy-esque. How terribly predicable. How silly, sad, and ultimately cowardly…
1) Linus is right, Microsoft needs to put up or shut up.
2) As a shareholder (yes, some of my mutual funds hold Microsoft stock) I am appalled that Microsoft would appear to violate several SEC (to say nothing of Sarbanes-Oxley) rules which preclude [...]

Man, I am tool old to be pulling 18 hr days all week, but here I am. Again. Coding away. What I am coding will have to remain a mystery for a little while, but what I am coding in is pretty cool. Its a really powerful Web App framework called RIFE, [...]
