Twitter: A Global, Public, Disjointed Gestalt

I’ve been a semi-active twitterer for the last year or so. The draw to many people I know about Twitter is the idea that they can get, at a glance, a look into what their friends and acquaintances are up to. However, if you look at what people actually twitter, its not really like that at all: I’ve come the conclusion that Twitter isn’t really like getting a glimpse into what my friends are up to, it’s more like walking down the street and hearing random snippets of conversation. In effect it’s a global, public, disjointed gestalt – an almost turrets-like stream of consciousness.

Imagine all your friends walking down random streets, where ever they are, and suddenly shouting out stuff. Not that there’s anything wrong with what we’re all doing on Twitter, it’s just an interesting effect…
